The Char Dham Yatra refers to a sacred pilgrimage circuit that covers four prominent Hindu
religious sites located in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. The four revered destinations in the
Char Dham Yatra are: Yamunotri: It is the starting point of the Char Dham Yatra. Yamunotri is
dedicated to Goddess Yamuna and is situated at an elevation of around 3,293 meters above
sea level. Pilgrims visit the Yamunotri Temple and take a holy dip in the hot springs known as
Janki Chatti. Gangotri: This is the second stop of the pilgrimage and is dedicated to Goddess
Ganga. It is located at an altitude of approximately 3,100 meters above sea level. The
Gangotri Temple is a significant site where devotees pay homage to the Ganges River, which
is believed to have originated from the Gangotri Glacier. Kedarnath: Kedarnath is devoted to
Lord Shiva and is nestled at an altitude of about 3,583 meters in the Garhwal Himalayas. The Kedarnath Temple, one of the twelve
Jyotirlingas, holds immense religious significance. Pilgrims trek through scenic routes or use ponies/helicopters to reach this site.
Badrinath: This is the final destination of the Char Dham Yatra and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Situated at an elevation of around
3,133 meters above sea level, the Badrinath Temple is an essential pilgrimage site for Hindus. It is believed that Adi Shankaracharya
discovered a black stone idol of Lord Badrinarayan here. The Char Dham Yatra typically commences from April-May and continues till
October-November, depending on weather conditions. Pilgrims undertake this spiritual journey seeking blessings and purification by
visiting these sacred sites. The Yatra attracts thousands of devotees and tourists each year, and the government and local authorities
take measures to ensure the safety and convenience of travelers. It's essential for pilgrims to be prepared for challenging terrain,
varying weather conditions, and altitude sickness, especially during the trekking parts of the journey. Adequate planning, carrying
essential medications, warm clothing, and checking the weather and road conditions are crucial for a safe and fulfilling Char Dham
Yatra experience.
